Sara Hanson-Hedgecock, Microseismic Advisor, joins Silixa’s Houston branch

Silixa is happy to announce that Sara Hanson-Hedgecock has joined the organization’s Houston branch in the capacity of Microseismic Advisor with immediate effect.

Sara joins Silixa with 10+ years of experience in seismic processing. Prior to joining Silixa, she worked as a microseismic geophysicist at Schlumberger where she was responsible for developing answer products for induced seismic monitoring.

We are thrilled that Sara has chosen to join Silixa. In the evolving environment, customers are looking for cost-effective innovative ways to optimize their assets. Distributed fiber optic sensing-based strain and microseismic acquisitions are playing an increasingly significant role in unlocking the energy resources. Sara holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Geophysics from Rice University, TX, USA, a Masters’ Degree in Geology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and a PhD in Geological Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Silixa expands its technical capability with addition of Senior Geophysicist

Silixa is pleased to announce that Pierpaolo Marchesini has joined the company’s UK branch in the capacity of Senior Geophysicist, effective immediately.

Pierpaolo’s appointment will help expand Silixa’s geophysical service offerings and will enable the company to respond faster to the global energy challenges, further developing Silixa’s active seismic monitoring portfolio in the renewable and alternative energy markets, focusing on applications such as geothermal and CO2 storage monitoring.

Silixa launches its advanced fibre-optic sensing-based monitoring solution for Carbon Capture and Storage

Carina® CarbonSecure™ delivers safety, sustainability, and substantial cost savings

24th November 2020, London, UK – Silixa has today announced the launch of Carina® CarbonSecure™, its distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) based solution for continuous or on-demand monitoring of all stages of carbon capture and storage (CCS) operations. The new solution offers offshore and on-land operators the necessary monitoring measures with a reduced cost and environmental impact of their CCS facilities. The solution enables operators to provide the assurance to regulators and communities necessary to expand CCS adoption worldwide.

Spokesperson Glynn Williams, CEO at Silixa, says: “CCS is a key component of the energy transition and plays an essential role in achieving international emissions targets. Studies from both the IPCC and the IEA recommend a renewed focus on CCS as the only proven technology that can be deployed at the scale needed to achieve essential climate goals. That is why we are launching Carina CarbonSecure: to enable the low-cost, reliable, and exceptionally accurate monitoring capability that is crucial to the take-up of CCS.”

Carina CarbonSecure delivers ultra-high resolution, densely sampled acoustic data for real-time continuous and/or on-demand monitoring. Elements of the solution include microseismic monitoring and passive seismic throughout the lifetime of a CO2 storage facility. The system also includes 3D vertical seismic profiling (VSP), time-lapse seismic, well-integrity and leak detection to ensure maximum safety over the various stages of CCS development.

Carina CarbonSecure is a reservoir management tool. It can be deployed to:

  1. Assess the viability of geological formations for carbon storage during site characterisation.
  2. Monitor microseismic activity during the injection phase.
  3. Ensure well and storage integrity when CO2 is being injected.
  4. Provide 4D monitoring of the CO2 plume migration throughout the lifetime of the facility.

Proven performance

At the core of Carina CarbonSecure is Silixa’s Carina® Sensing System, a patented, precision-engineered fibre-optic acoustic sensing system that is proven to achieve 20 dB or 100x improvement in signal-to-noise ratio compared to standard DAS systems.

Carina CarbonSecure requires minimal seismic sources on land and fewer seismic shots offshore to acquire seismic data, meaning it can significantly reduce a project’s environmental impact and cost. The system can be fully automated, enabling unmanned and remote seismic surveys on demand, lowering costs further while increasing employee safety.

In addition, Carina CarbonSecure’s fibre array delivers high resolution temperature data, is permanently installed and, because it has no mechanical parts, can be used without maintenance for decades in line with mandated CCS monitoring periods.

 Williams adds: “Carina CarbonSecure is new in the market, but it utilises proven technology with a significant track record throughout the hydrocarbon value chain. We have leveraged the extensive experience, R&D investment, and technical expertise within Silixa to create a low-impact solution that can secure CO2 storage facilities – and demonstrate that security – while transforming the CCS cost model. We believe it is a vital step for creating a viable global infrastructure for essential CCS.”

Garth Naldrett, Chief Product Officer, will deliver the keynote speech on how developments in subsea hardware and distributed sensing allowed fiber optics to be brought into subsea wells, filling the previous data void. He will also present a case study on BP’s Atlantis Field in the Gulf of Mexico describing how engineered fibers allow permanently installed sensors to acquire both 3D and 4D seismic surveys in multiple subsea wells at significantly lower cost to conventional technologies.

Michael Mondanos, VP Environmental Mining and Infrastructure, will present on the fundamental operating principles of a DTS system, describing both active and passive techniques. He will discuss our latest applications, sharing our latest case studies of measurements of low flow rates in boreholes & dams. He will highlight how these application have given operators greater insight into the safety and operation of their assets.

The workshop will bring together lead researchers developing sensing tools and experts in the field of distributed fiber optic sensing with the aim to promote the use of this innovative technology in Asia Pacific.

Diversification pays dividends as PE-backed Silixa delivers 96% year-on-year growth

Strategic expansion combined with strong performance in energy and mining driven by the introduction of the Carina® Sensing System nearly doubles turnover to £20.35m

London, UK, 22 October 2020: Silixa, the specialist service company delivering distributed fibre optic monitoring solutions for the world’s most demanding data acquisition challenges, has announced 2019 as a breakthrough year for the firm’s financial and strategic performance.

Backed by Lime Rock Partners, Chevron Technology Ventures, and Equinor Ventures, the company’s global turnover grew by 96% to £20.35m. In the same period, profit margins also increased from 48% to 51% and EBITDA grew to £2.75m despite significant reinvestment into the business.

CEO, Glynn Williams, credits the company’s diversification strategy with its success: “Since 2007 Silixa has focused on serving the oil and gas sector, deploying and developing the highest quality distributed fibre-optic sensing-based monitoring solutions on the market. In 2019, we doubled down on our diversification strategy, entering sectors in need of accurate monitoring solutions like ours, but which were historically underserved. The speed and extent to which that strategy has paid off points to just how much benefit these markets get from technology like ours.”

The firm now operates across five sectors outside oil and gas: alternative energy, mining, environment and earth sciences, infrastructure, and defence. Key elements of Silixa’s success included the adoption of the innovative FibreWrap™ process flow metering system by the mining sector, and the transfer of oil and gas micro-seismic solutions to improve the efficiency of geothermal power production. The Carina® Sensing System has been introduced as an innovative and cost-effective solution for long-term monitoring in the rapidly emerging carbon capture and underground storage (CCUS) market.

With greater diversification in 2019, 44% of revenues came from non-oil and gas operations, with the environmental and infrastructure division alone growing by 136%. Silixa’s heritage in oil and gas continued to deliver however, with 109% sales growth, driven by the award winning Carina® XwellXpress™ hydraulic fracking diagnostic service and Carina® Subsea 4D solution for offshore and deepwater sectors.

Williams continues: “2019 was a landmark year for Silixa, but we haven’t faded in 2020. The Silixa team has done a tremendous job in responding quickly to create a Covid-Secure working environment for our manufacturing activities and uninterrupted service to our customers. The pandemic has had an impact on the unconventional oil and gas sector, however our orders have already returned strongly as customers recognise the quality of actionable frac diagnostic data from our XwellXpress logging service. In our other sectors, we are still growing and delivering large, long-term projects, so fortunately we have been protected from the COVID-19 fallout. In fact our operational footprint has now extended to all seven continents. Our customers tend to be sticky: once they start working with us, they rarely interrupt that.”

The business has taken steps to ensure that 2019’s success is replicable in the long-term, investing heavily in new products, R&D and organisational development. Improved working capital management has also delivered a £2.8m increase in net assets over the same period.

Ian joins Silixa with 15+ years’ experience gained in various roles both offshore and onshore with Expro Group, Baker Hughes, Subsea 7 and DOF Subsea. He brings strong technical expertise and domain knowledge of both oil & gas production and emerging alternative energy resources. He has previously held responsibility for assessing the significant potential of emerging offshore renewable markets and worked within a team to successfully deliver the first project wins in this sector.

Silixa’s innovative solutions win 2020 World Oil awards

On October 15, 2020, at the 2020 World Oil Awards, Silixa garnered significant industry recognition by winning the prestigious World Oil award in two categories: in the category of Best Deep Water Technology and New Horizons Idea.

The Best Deep Water Technology award for the company’s Carina® Subsea 4D solution, the world’s first permanent ultra HD in-well seismic data acquisition system for subsea wells which allows operators to perform more frequent seismic acquisitions at a much lower cost, enabling them to accelerate production and increase ultimate recovery, was accepted by Garth Naldrett, Chief Product Officer.

“To be receiving this award today makes us extremely proud. Our Carina Subsea 4D system provides a vast amount of real-time data in an environment that normally only had a few measurement points available. This provides a big improvement in the efficiency of developing subsea fields not only for hydrocarbon extraction, but possibly even more importantly to ensure and monitor the safe storage of carbon in subsea fields. The New Horizons Idea award was presented to Silixa for its  Carina® XwellXpress solution.  This low frequency strain and microseismic monitoring service accurately locates microseismic and strain events in real-time through cost-effective and flexible wireline intervention, allowing operators to improve stimulation and completion designs that maximise ROI without the need to place permanent cables in the well. The award was accepted by Pete Richter, Vice President North America.
