Baker Huges’ Intervention Day, to be held in Stavanger on 14 May 2025, will focus on demonstrating how we are driving progress by solving intervention challenges through technological advancement and digital integration.
Erick Jimenez, Silixa’s Sr Petrophysics Data Analyst, will present on Advanced Techniques for Addressing Critical Injection Well Challenges. His presentation will focus on DTS and DAS analysis using a novel inverted DTS “cool-down” algorithm using fibre optics.
During a project in the Netherlands, advanced Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technologies were applied to support the remediation of a critically impaired geothermal injector well suffering from severe permeability loss due to extensive scale buildup and a >90-meter sand plug.
A mechanical and chemical clean-up treatment was performed to restore access to total depth and to improve reservoir contact, including sand plug removal and targeted acid stimulation to dissolve scale and enhance permeability.
To evaluate the treatment’s effectiveness and enable precise injection profiling, a novel inverted DTS “cool-down” algorithm was developed, replacing the traditional warm-back approach, which was ineffective due to the higher temperature of injected fluids compared to the reservoir.
DTS and DAS data were recorded before and after treatment across multiple operational stages, including shut-in and active injection. These measurements enabled assessment of flow distribution, identification of residual damage zones, and supported long-term reservoir management through high-resolution thermal and acoustic diagnostics.
The results show that using advanced distributed sensing-based diagnostics and innovative treatment techniques enhance well performance and reservoir management.
