Microseismic monitoring

Silixa’s DAS microseismic monitoring provides continuous data, processed to contribute information to aid understanding of the geomechanical response to mining activity and of seismic hazards.

DAS provides dense spatial sampling in harsh environments with minimum maintenance. The dense sampling enables improved interpretation and hence improved operational efficiency and safety.

Cost-saving high-quality data

Carina® Sensing System, the precision engineered distributed acoustic sensing system, has a broadband response with a noise floor similar to geophones. This facilitates the correct recording of seismic events over a wide range of magnitudes. The sensing element is the fibre which can be kilometres long and spatial sampling can be <1m. This enables good coverage of large operational areas with one measurement and makes the technology cost-efficient.

Increased safety

Improved interpretation of data through dense measurements leads to an enhanced understanding of the situation, enabling action to be taken when necessary. With one cable DAS measurements can be combined with temperature (DTS) and strain (DSS) measurements to provide further insight. Unmanned and remote operations, with minimum maintenance, improve site safety.

Increased efficiency

Flexible deployment of the system enables increased operational efficiency. Fibre-optic cables can be temporarily or permanently deployed, remaining operational for years. They may be buried at the surface or installed in boreholes. The technology can be used in harsh and high-temperature environments with no maintenance requirements to the cable.
