Connect with us at the Role of Geophysics in Carbon Capture and Sequestration workshop, organised by SEG, in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia on 5–7 December 2022, where Glynn Williams, Silixa’s CEO, will be presenting on the use of distributed fiber optic sensing applications for improved efficiency and safety in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage projects.
Carbon net zero targets are only achievable with geological storage of CO2; therefore, geophysics are set to play an important role as geophysical investigation can effectively address all aspects of the life cycle of CCS, from feasibility analysis and site selection to the reservoir monitoring phase.
The main challenge of carbon capture operations is demonstrating permanent containment and as such these operations require reliable monitoring systems over the lifetime of projects.
Silixa has developed a new distributed sensing-based monitoring solution called Carina® CarbonSecure™ that delivers ultra-high resolution, densely sampled distributed data for real-time continuous monitoring. The solution comprises real-time recognition of a breach of well integrity, baseline passive micro seismic detection and location, injection profiling and later in life 3D/4D vertical seismic profiling (VSP) for plume detection. The system remains active after completion of placement of CO2 to ensure there is no breach or escape of CO2 during long-term storage. When performing time-lapsed seismic the enhanced 100x performance in signal-to-noise ratio of Carina® interrogators require less intrusive seismic sources onshore and fewer shots offshore, meaning a significant decrease in environmental impact and costs.
Glynn’s presentation will showcase case studies that demonstrate the efficiency and reliability of this monitoring system.
