Connect with us at the SPE Virtual Workshop on in-well fiber-optic sensing: applications for field development and field management on 16–17 February 2022.
The workshop will bring together lead technical experts to demonstrate the value and benefits of in-well FO sensing through extensive case studies. It will also provide guidance for developing workflows and best practices.
Garth Naldrett, Silixa’s Chief Product Officer, Sebastien Soulas, Senior Advisor Borehole Seismic at Lytt, and Jean-Paul van Gestel, Adviser Geophysical Integration at BP, will deliver a presentation on how developments in subsea hardware and distributed sensing allowed fiber optics to be brought into subsea wells, filling the previous data void. They will present a case study on BP’s Atlantis Field in the Gulf of Mexico describing how engineered fibers allow permanently installed sensors to acquire both 3D and 4D seismic surveys in multiple subsea wells at significantly lower cost to conventional technologies.
The talk will describe the 18-months evaluation, test, and development program on a DAS system for measurements on the Atlantis subsea wells. It will describe the initial laboratory testing, subsequent onshore field trial and an advanced emulation setup for optimisation of the fiber and interrogator parameters. The presentation will also reveal how a close collaboration between Silixa, BP and Lytt allowed seismic modelling and instrument requirements to be determined and validated.
Veronique Mahue, Head of Data Services and Flow Allocation Principal, will present a case study on how joint DAS and DTS monitoring complemented with PDG data has enabled efficient production allocation, well integrity assessment and gas lift injection monitoring of several dual-string heavy oil producers offshore Malaysia.
Permanently installed fiber optic cables, extending through the reservoir sections in the given field, replaced several conventional monitoring techniques while significantly minimized production deferments. Joint DAS and DTS interpretation results have allowed for a comprehensive performance assessment of each well. This case study has reinforced how using a combined monitoring approach of DAS and DTS yields a significantly deeper insight into well performance.
Mahmoud Farhadiroushan, Silixa’s Executive Director, will present on the latest developments in integrated distributed sensing. His presentation will feature the latest advancements in distributed strain sensing, in particular Silixa’s intelligent Distributed Strain Sensor (iDSS) that provides absolute strain measurements with the finest resolution and fast measurement time.
The interrogator design is based on a highly sensitive interferometric detection technique that allows to measure the instantaneous frequency of the backscatter light along the entire length of fiber. This enables for the acquisition of complete strain profiles with every laser shot, meaning low noise strain data can be collected with sub-second averaging times.
With this transformative performance precision strain data can be collected and used in numerous applications, such as subsidence, offshore wind farm or hydraulic fracture monitoring.
